At Kendal~Crosslands Communities, leadership has the responsibility of providing for the present and preparing for the future. Both are necessary for meeting the needs of residents and staff while securing the ongoing financial viability of the community. Below are listed our 2017 Board of Directors and then listed are Key Leadership Team members working at the community.
2017 Board of Directors
The following people comprise the board of directors of Kendal~Crosslands Communities:
Marcy is an attorney, currently of counsel with the law firm of Reger, Rizzo & Darnall in West Chester, PA. Most of her career was spent with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC), with more than 25 years’ experience as an administrative law judge, focusing primarily on all aspects of utility regulation. Marcy is a long time member of Downingtown Monthly Meeting.
Jose M. Colon
Jose is bi-lingual, fluent in Spanish and English. Currently Director of Lending and Member Service at Keystone FCU, West Chester, PA. Member of Longwood Rotary Club and has served as past president, member of Alliance for Better Housing and current President. Board member of La Comunidad Hispana, Board member of Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce, Current Treasurer of Kennett Biznet, Borough Councilman of West Grove Borough Council, Executive Committee Member at Large of Republican Committee of Chester County.
Kay, from Villanova, Pa, is a retired Executive Director of the Friends Council on Education. Her other board memberships include the Friends Center Corporation, Haverford College Board, and past President of the Council of American Private Education. Kay served on the Kendal Corporation Board and as chair of the Board Development Committee and provided input on and assistance with Values and Practices booklet revision, System Review orchestration, and Kendal Values Education.
Willard F. Hurd
Will lives in Newark DE with his four children and his wife, a senior IT consultant and seminarian. He is a graduate of Westtown School and a member of Media Monthly Meeting, with a BS in Systems Engineering from Boston University and a BArch from Drexel University. He is a registered architect in DE and PA and owner of Footprint Architecture & Design, a local architecture firm. He previously worked for several local firms on a broad variety of building types. He devotes a significant portion of his time and energy to support and grow his many communities. Current service: City of Newark Planning Commission; Newark Community Cooperative Store Cafe Committee, chair; Westtown School Alumni Connectors; Newark Charter High School Career & Technical Education Advisory Group. Previous service: Delaware Valley Green Building Council LEED Regional Priority Credits Committee; Downtown Newark Partnership Design Committee; AIA Delaware Program Committee, chair; Newark Community Cooperative Store Relocation Committee, chair; Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Newark Campus Task Force and Property Committee.
Sally R. Harrison
Senior Philanthropic Advisor for Bryn Mawr College, where she is an alumna. Formerly at the American Friends Service Committee and then served on their board of directors. Member of the Haverford College Corporation. Member of Downingtown Monthly Meeting, where she serves as clerk of the Endowment Committee.
Jon is Head of the Middle School at Wilmington Friends School since 2012, and has worked there previously as a teacher and coach. He has also served as the founding Head of School for eight years at a newly formed Quaker school in Forest Hill, MD, Harford Friends School. Jon also has experience as a Director of Development at the Genesee Valley Outdoor Learning Center, in Parkton, MD. Jon has served on the boards of the Maryland Center for Character Education and the community advisory board of the United Way of Central Maryland.
Principle and Chief Investment Officer of Swarthmore Investment, LLC a firm he created in 2004. Prior to establishing Swarthmore, Mike held senior positions in financial institutions including Merrill Lynch, Janney Montgomery Scott, and Wells Fargo Advisors, Mike has been a board member of Family and Community Service of Delaware County, He currently is a member of the Rotary Club of Swarthmore, While living in Vermont, he was on the board of the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce. He has been active in Thresholds (teaching decision making in prisons), Citizens Advocates Inc. (providing series to the disabled), Swarthmore Friends Meeting and Pendle Hill.
Since 1988, Freeman Miller has been an Orthopedic Surgeon at the Alfred I duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware, and an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the Thomas Jefferson University Medical College. In addition to his clinical work, he is a researcher and author of numerous scholarly articles and books in his field. Freeman is a member of Centre Monthly Meeting in Centreville, DE, and he has extensive volunteer board experience, notably with Wilmington Friends School.
Thomas D. Paxson
Tom is a retired Professor whose 33 year academic career was spent at Southern Illinois University. A graduate of Juniata College, he earned his Ph.D. at the University of Rochester. He as been actively engaged in volunteer activities. Tom served on the Christian and Interfaith Relations Committee of Friends General Conference and for Friends General Conference attended the last three of the Assemblies of the World Council of Churches: Harare, Zimbabwe, Porto Alegre, Brazil, and Busan, Republic of Korea. He is currently on the Working Group of the African Great Lakes Initiative and the Board of the School of the Spirit. Tom, a lifelong Friend, is currently a member of Kendal Monthly Meeting.
Susan M. Renz
Currently working with the U.S. Department of Justice and the Office of the Inspector General as a Federal monitor. Also the Associate Program Director for the Adult/Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program and Senior Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and works in private practice in Kennett Square, is a member of the Attorney General’s Medical/Legal Advisory Board for Abuse and Neglect. She has more than 25 years of experience working in long-term care. Sue has worked as a clinician, director of nursing, and regional director of health served in a variety of long-term care facilities. She has provide consultation to long-term care facilities on fall management, restraint, reduction, survey preparedness, and pharmacological management, She continues to serve as a board member, expert witness, and student preceptor. Friends Committee on National Legislation, Coordinating Committee and Standing Committee of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, and the American Political Science Association.
Daniel W. Williams
Architect with Loustau/ Williams concentrating on energy efficient projects. Degrees in City Planning, Architecture and Education. Served on numerous township and Quaker boards, but now raises chickens that provide excellent eggs to many. He has three children and is a member of West Grove Meeting.
Jeffrey C. Wise
For prior 4 years he is Vice President for Financial Services & Insurance at Penn Chester County Hospital. Before then Jeff worked for over 20 years in various healthcare insurance underwriting and healthcare consulting capacities focusing on community hospital and academic medical center employers. Jeff is a Senior Professional of Human Resources (SPHR) in the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and a member of the Philadelphia chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association. He also services on the Finance Committee at CVIM in West Chester and the Finance Committee of the Kendal~Crosslands Communities.
Owner of RW Group, a Certified Public Accounting firm located in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Previously was a principal with Reznick Group in their Bethesda, MD office and held positions with various local accounting firms. Previously served on the Westtown School Finance Committee and Annual Giving Committee. Currently serving on the Audit Committee of Kendal Corporation and clerk of board of directors. Clerk of the Finance Committee of the London Grove Monthly Meeting and a member of the audit committee for the Western Quarterly Meeting. National Speaker for accounting continuing education programs. Past member of the advisory board and finance committee for the Salvation Army of Delaware, past treasurer of the Suburban Music School, and past president of the Somerset Lake Service Association. Also previously served a six year term as an elected auditor for New Garden Township, Pennsylvania.
