Kendal-Crosslands Early Learning Center:

Recognizing the need for quality and convenient child care for the staff who work within the community, Kendal~ Crosslands Communities established an Early Learning Program in 1982. Aligned with the Crosslands Communities values that “Our communities must be good places to work if they are good places to live,” our goal is to make the Child Development Center a wonderful place for children to grow up in. To attain this goal we provide a child-centered environment that is stable, secure and nurturing. This atmosphere allows the teachers to work together to develop a program that further addresses the children’s social, physical, and cognitive needs in unison with emphasizing both child-resident and child-community interactions.

We are fortunate enough to be located in the heart of Crosslands Retirement Community. This unique intergenerational setting provides us with many advantages including extensive walking trails, indoor and outdoor pools, and the use of the transportation department for field trips and intergenerational programming. Children enrolled in our program are welcomed into a wide variety of wonderful intergenerational experiences. Our intergenerational program allows children and residents to interact on several different levels and enrich both the young and the old experiences at Crosslands. Our main goal during these activities is to build relationships that focus on respect for all generations and spark teachable moments and memory for both the child and the resident. Residents often enrich our daily program in a variety of ways by participating in swimming lessons, reading stories to the children, and assisting in the classroom. Through intergenerational experiences, children in our center develop an understanding of the aging process and experience the true meaning of an extended family and community. In addition to daily intergenerational programming; Spanish lessons, swimming lessons, gymnastics, and field trips are offered in the toddler and preschool program.

In our program we use the Creative Curriculum®. The Creative Curriculum® is built on theories of development in young children, that all children learn best through active exploration of their environment and therefore the environment plays a critical role in learning. The goal of the Creative Curriculum is to help children become independent, self-confident, inquisitive and enthusiastic learners by actively exploring their environment. Our curriculum is designed with a balance between free play and structured activities, as well as small and large group activities. The curriculum is also designed to have an equal balance between teacher-planned activities and child-initiated learning. Our curriculum emphasizes teacher responsiveness to the children’s strengths, interests, needs, and learning styles. Additionally, an equal focus is put on social and emotional growth. Clear limits, positive reinforcement, and a stable environment encourage the children to develop self-control and self-esteem to respect themselves and others around them. In order to ensure a high-quality early childhood program, we offer learning opportunities for all children that will influence them in their formal schooling.  We maintain developmentally appropriate and achievable expectations for children, using clear performance standards that are aligned with the Pennsylvania Early Learning Standards.
