The holidays are here! That means festivities, dining and entertainment for residents, staff and their families alike at Kendal-Crosslands Communities. There are so many choices that you’ll surely find something to enjoy.
The community is decorated throughout with wreaths, trees and more. Each year, residents join in with staff, helping to decorate the community by hanging greens and decorating trees, all set to holiday music, making for a lovely scene.
For residents who will be decorating their own apartment homes, the maintenance team is just a phone call away to help set up your tree or hang your lights and decorations.
“I have a tree that I set up in my apartment,” says Karen Halstead, a resident of Kendal at Longwood, “and someone from the maintenance staff always helps me to bring it in from the storage area of my porch, and then they return after the holidays to come put it away again.”
Delicious holiday dining
The holidays are a delicious time of year at Kendal-Crosslands! Starting on the first night of Hanukkah, residents are treated to a traditional Hanukkah dinner, including latkes and jelly donuts. Early December also includes a special evening meal that serves delicious dining options from around the world as a special treat.
Later in the month, residents have the option to purchase homemade baked goods from the kitchen, such as cookies, cakes, pies, fruitcakes and more, for their own enjoyment or to share and gift to others.
On Christmas Eve, a celebration will be held in the beautifully decorated dining room, with a special dinner for residents and their guests. On Christmas Day, there will be a delicious brunch served at noon.
A little in-house competition
An event that the Kendal community looks forward to every year is the gingerbread house competition among staff members and their families. Each year, they compete on teams against one another to make the mightiest gingerbread house of all. Once they are complete, they are put on display in the hallway for residents to vote on the winner. After a week or two of voting, the winning team receives a gift certificate.
“It’s very fun to watch them put the houses together. Sometimes it’s a staff person and their child, or a mom and dad, and one or two children. Sometimes it’s two staff people teaming up,” says Karen.
Holiday entertainment, on and off campus
The holidays also offer up some great entertainment, including the Kendal Singers’ concert, and numerous bus trips to shows and concerts. Residents have been enjoying the sights and sounds of the Kennett Symphony Holiday Concert, the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, The Pennsylvania Ballet, neighboring Longwood Gardens, and The Philadelphia Orchestra, among others. Transportation is even provided for each trip.
